The Costa Rica National Museum is the most important cultural centre and point of reference of the historical background of the country. The purpose of this museum is not only to collect historical documents or objects of interest, but also to act as an institution for scientific research thus offering invaluable material to primary and secondary education.

Amongst its permanent exhibitions, four of them are grouped under two main themes: anthropology and history

Pre-Columbine History Room:

The arqueologic theme leads the path from the early way of life of the natives dating back 10,000 yrs. B.C. to the arrival of the Spanish “Conquistadores” in the XVI century. Among the collection displayed in this room of the Costa Rica National Museum we can find objects made of ceramic, stone, clay, bone, jade and gold.

The indigenous gold room :

Here we can admire the museum gold collection; the main attraction are objects of arquelologic value where gold is represented under a different perspective, for the indigenous artists gold had a greater spiritual importance thana commercial value.

Sala de Historia Patria:

A glance at the historical events from the period of the Spanish arrival till 1950. Drawings, photographs, documents and other objects belonging to the Ticos of all walks of life.

The colonial house:

A remake of an old colonial house where walls, roof, floor, windows and doors are originals belonging to an old house in Guanacaste which was dismantled and brought to the capital´s museum.
