The name "Namu" is the Bribri word for jaguar, the sacred animal to so many tribes of Central America. This name addresses one aspect of the gallery mission - to respect and celebrate the permanence and legacy of the first people of this land.

Popular art in Costa Rica is colorful and joyful, a perfect reminder of the traditions and flavours of this rich country.

Intheir downtown San José gallery you will find the incredible art and craftworkNamu store inside that comes from Costa Rica indigenous and folk artists. There is no other gallery in the country that has brought together such an outstandingcollection.

Namu offers a glowing selections of paintings, many from women living in isolated farming communities, many painted on "bateas" and "comales" which are Costa Rica's traditional serving platters and skillets.

The selection of mask is carefully chosen from the death masks of the Chorotega Indians, and the famous "Diablitos" ceremonial masks of the Boruca indians. One can also find a selection of contemporary masks in ceramic and wood to delight the eye.

The objective ofNamu art galleryis to bring to you these unique works, at reasonable prices, not only for your delight, but also to give the artists the forum they deserve.

Namu engages in 'fair trade' practices: the artists get paid immediately. Namu is nota consignment gallery and the artists are assured of receiving equitable compensation.

Namu Baskets Despite the general consensus that Costa Rica is not a country one comes to expect to find an array of arts (other than wood crafts), Namu proves that this is simply not the case.

When one looks hard enough, asNamu did, there is a rich and diverse body of folk and indigenous art which is not hard to imagine, given the great natural beauty of this land - how could it not inspire the beautiful art we have assembled.
