Barra del Colorado protects hot humid forests, mangroves, canals and marine areas on the north side of the Caribbean Coast on the border with Nicaragua It is the biggest national wild life refuge in Costa Rica forming with Tortuguero a large conservation area administered by the (ACTO) Area de Conservacion Tortuguero.
There are no public park facilities at this national wildlife refuge, the biological station where researches are carried out can be reached only by canal boat.
The park attractions are very similar to Tortuguero with its intricate network of canals and lagoons it offers an incredible variety of wildlife.
Fishing is the number one attraction all year round, however, the best time of the year for tarpon is from January to June and for snook September through December.
Other type of catches may include: jack crevalle, cubera snapper, gar, mackerel, barracuda, tuna, marlin, sailfish. Rivers also offer plenty of opportunities for angling blue gill and rainbow bass among other species. Don´t forget the name of the game is: ”catch and release”.
How to get there: there are no roads in the area, your best bet is to fly to Barra del Colorado (30 mins. fly) on the south side of the mouth of the Rio Colorado (Colorado River). Travel in the area is almost exclusively by boat that can be arranged from Tortuguero, Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui or from Moin (near Limon).
Bring your passport (and insect repellent!) as you will be very near the Nicaraguan border. Watch out for crocodiles!
