El Rodeo Forest Reserve

El Rodeo Protected Zone Fauna... Armadillo
On the Southwestern corner of the Central Valley lays this forest of approx. 990 acres (400 hectares) which is part of a large cattle ranch. The forest is spread around the property in patches of different sizes. Some of the larger ones include an area starting from the old hacienda untill beyond the United Nations University for Peace (the prestigious Costa Rican Campus of this renowned International Institution is also located inside the Reserve). To reach these forests one must cross some pasture land on foot or drive along the gravel road on the right just before the University for Peace, all the way down towards the community of Piedras Negras.

This is a renowned area for butterflies’ lovers due to the number of beautiful species not so easy to detect elsewhere in the Country. In the different eco-systems of this pre-alpine moist forest, birdwatchers will admire a mixture of middle elevation and dry forest bird species such as: Rufus-and-white Wren, Red-crowned Ant-Tanager, Lesser Ground-Cuckoo, Blue-crowned Motmot and Fiery-billed Aracari.

Getting there:

From the south side of the Metropolitan Park of La Sabana, drive on the highway towards Santa Ana and Ciudad Colon for about 10 miles (approx. 16 kms). Once in Ciudad Colon, follow the one way traffic up hill through the town and then turn right following the sign to the University for Peace. It is about 4 miles drive (6 kms) before reaching El Rodeo.

Climate:

The climate in this area is mild and warm all year round with strong but short precipitations during the rainy season.
