Its name comes from the indigenous word “Iaratzu” which means “noisy mountain”.

Costa Rica's Irazu Volcano is an active strato volcano which is constantly monitored by the Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Costa Rica (OVSICORI-UNA).

The last major activity date back 1963 and 1965 with intermittent eruptions and lava flows.

The unusual bright greenish yellow coloring of the lake at Diego de la Haya Crater is caused by rainfall dissolving the minerals along the craters walls. The lake is also closely monitored for changes in its chemistry (sulphuric acid) and temperature.

The visitor center is open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm

Entrance fee: $ 6.00 p.p. plus parking
