Rara Avis is a private enterprise protecting up to 2,471 acres (10.000 km2) of virgin forest on the East side of Braulio Carrillo National Park. This biologic research station is an excellent example of rainy forest sustainable development.

More than 330 different kinds of birds have been detected in Rara Avis as well as several bromelias, orchids and lianes. It is very common to see monkeys, ant-eaters and coatimundis. Even though it is possible to observe tapir's or wild cat's footprints, it is very difficult to detect them due to the huge forest area they have at their disposal where they can easily hide from visitors.

One visit requires at least one night stay at the “Waterfall Lodge”, as from the village of Horquetas (1 ½ hrs trip from San José ) to the Lodge it will take more or less 4 hrs by tractor. To get to Horquetas from San José drive through the Braulio Carrillo road or the Poás road passing through the little fluvial village of Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí.
