Palo Verde National Park

Palo Verde National Park Fauna
About 30 kms. (19miles) to the west of Bagaces, between the Tempisque and Bebedero rivers is Palo Verde National Park, a favorite location for bird lovers.

The parks owe its name to a small shrub found in the marsh zones whose leaves, branches and trunk maintain their clear green color throughout the year.

Due to the importance of its wetlands, which include brackish and fresh water lagoons as well as marshes, evergreen mangrove forests and rivers banks, Palo verde was decleared in 1992 an Intenational Wetland Area of Importance (Ramsar),

Its natural hydrologic system fosters conditions that facilitates the most important concentration of acquatic birds in C. R. and of all Central America. Among them the Jabiru, the Pink egret, the Great egret, the Needlenosed egret, the Glossy ibis and the Northern Jacana.

Among the mammals that live in the park are the Howling (Congo) and Capuchin monkeys, White- nosed coati and White-tailed deer Also and along the Tempisque river, crocodiles of up to five meters in length have also been observed.

Among the large variety of trees there are two types that stand out for their beauty and size: the Skeels, Anacardium excelsum (Espavel) and the Kapok, Ceiba pentandra, a large, deciduous, tropical tree.

Palo Verde national park trails offer some of the best panoramic views of the country, from where one can observe most of the lagoons, a large section of the Gulf of Nicoya, the Isla de Pajaros and most of the Tempisque river.

The Park is open from 6 am to 6 pm during the summer season (December-April) and from 6 am to 4 pm during the winter season. (May-November).
