This is a lowland tropical rainforest bordering Braulio Carrillo National Park, between the Sarapiqui and Puerto Viejo Rivers. The Organization for Tropical Studies administers a Biological Station in this protected zone. There is a marked trail system (more than 30 miiles – 50 kms) and scientific study possibilities for visitors.

The U. S. National Science Academy distinguished La Selva Biological Reserve as one of the four most interesting places in the world for research of the tropical rainforest. More than 500 different kinds of birds have been identified as well as 100 mammals, 2000 plants and 800 trees.
