Monteverde & Santa Elena Biological Reserve

On the Inter American Highway turn right at Lagarto (km 134). Last 35 km to Santa Elena up steep and gravel.

This Reserve (created in 1951 by Quackers who immigrated from the U.S.) boasts a wealth of diversity in flora and fauna most of which is unique in the world; this fact alone has made it a not to be missed visitor attraction: a place where nature-loving tourists and scientists can share one place that satisfies their diverse interests. For all what mentioned till now, it is one of the best models in the Country of a successful relationship between conservation and tourism.

A number of trails allow visitors to observe the cloud forest. Approximately 400 bird species, 490 butterfly species, more than 100 species of mammal, 2,500 plant species (500 of which are orchids) and tens of thousands of insects have been identified here. Noteworthy wildlife includes the jaguar, tapir, lark, umbrella bird and the resplendent quetzal.

Points of interest are: Cheese Factory where you can observe cheese making in Monteverde from a window in the sales room. Good place to buy locally made ice cream and cheese from the local Quakers.

The "Casem" a wonderful handcrafts store in the area where locals show off their talents of indigenous artwork. Crafts include wall hangings, linens, jewelry, wood work, paintings and so much more. By purchasing from CASEM you are helping to support the community.

The Reserve is open from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Santa Elena


Area

Approx 766 acres (310 hectares)

Managed by the Santa Elena Technical Professional School, the Santa Elena Preserve, as it is commonly known, is dedicated to the protection of the cloud forest and considered a contribution to the education of the Santa Elena community. Nature is breathtaking and on clear days, it is possible to admire views of Arenal Volcano. All profits are used to protect the forest and to develop environmental programs.

Several trails are available to enjoy the 310-hectare preserve. The preserve is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
