Birds have always delighted people all over the world because of their beauty and their power of flight. Costa Rica has so many beautiful and exotic birds surrounded by breathtaking landscapes. One does not have to go to the far reaches of the rain forest to see the many inhabitants of bird species in this country. Costa Rica bird watching is a popular destination for so many, the fact is that there are 840 different bird species in an area no larger than West Virginia which is more than all of North America.
The “resplendent quetzal” with tail feathers of the male upto 2ft in lenght is the most beautiful and sought after bird species in Costa Rica. Birdwatchers from around the world travel to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve in the Tilarán mountains with hopes of catching a glimpse of this magnificent bird.

Scarlet Macaws, the largest of the Neotropical parrots in Costa Rica is also very popular among birdwatchers. Scarlet macaws prefer undisturbed rainforest and the prime locations for viewing these colorful birds are Corcovado National Park on the Osa Peninsula also Palo Verde National Park.
Corcovado National Park and the Lapa Rios reserve are to name a few prime bird watching areas where so many species can be seen. Compared to other sports, birding is not expensive. A notebook, a field guide, and binoculars and of course no birder would be without a hat to shield the sun.
Yes. Birding is a quest. You set out to see birds - but the prize you come back with can only be described as happiness. Learning to bird is like getting a lifetime ticket to the theater of nature.
