Puerto Viejo de Limon

Puerto Viejo comes in various colors and flavors, just like being in front of an an ice-cream counter. It is a world apart, so typical of the character of Costa Rica, another small world apart.
Get there by bus or by car, the road is pretty good, but watch out, during the rainy season they get easily flooded.

The village and the surrounding areas are very pretty indeed, although slowly giving way to tourist activities but still remaining a very nice place to be.

Puerto Viejo is a crossroad of cultures, the afro Caribbean and indigenous. Lately foreigners from all the continents have chosen this corner of the world as their home.

If you are a surf enthusiast you couldn’t  be in a better place. The world famous Salsa Brava, for advanced surfers only, has been called Costa Rica's heaviest and best wave with quadruple overheads. The area around Puerto Viejo offers a variety of other beaches for surfing too such as Cocles, Punta Uva, and Manzanillo/Gandoca.

Dive  or snorkel in the coral reef, fish in the ocean, hire a horse for a ride along  the deserted beaches or simply lay in the sun. Children will find nice beaches to play but must be looked upon by parents. Beware of Ocean strong currents!

Puerto Viejo has some really lovely accommodation options, from quaint cabinas to bungalows all  immersed in lavish gardens. There are great restaurants along the main road ranging from Creole, Italian, or local cuisine. Puerto Viejo has some pretty sizzling night life with various reggae bars that sit along the beach.  Various local tours or excursions like the Cahiuta National Park  and the Manzanillo/Gandioca Wildlife Refuge are a favorite.

Do not forget to visit the Manzanillo/Gandoca Wildlife Refuge that extends all the way to the Panamenian border. Among the animal species that live within its boundaries are manatees, crocodiles and over 350 species of birds. The Reserve also includes beaches where four species of turtles come to nest between March and July.
