Caribbean Region
The Caribbean area or “El Caribe” of Costa Rica is the perfect place for travellers at heart, for those who have travelled the world and are happy to come back again. Here the forest opens to splendid idyllic views of a rich and priceless ecosystem. It has the typical rainforest climate, hot and humid, with an average temperature of 26 Celsius.
The Caribbean is located in the occidental coast of Costa Rica and separated by a central valley and a steep mountain range. It can be geographically divided into two large zones:
The North Caribbean extends from Limón to the Nicaraguan border, the area were the“S. Juan” river flows from nearby Nicaragua through a long plain, covered with a luxuriant forest, to finally giving its waters to the Caribbean Ocean.
There are many rivers flowing into the S. Juan, the majority of which are part of a network of channels that can be navigated by small boats most transporting passengers and visitors alike and other carrying merchandise to the villagers.
The most important destinations along the canals are Tortuguero, Parismina and Barra del Colorado.This network of canals also plays a very important role in agriculture, ensuring a good distribution of this most precious element: water .
The South Caribbean extends over the southern side of Limón to the Sixaola river next to the border with Panama. This is the area that offers miles of pristine beaches shaded by coconut palms and a sea full of wonders where fishing, diving and snorkeling in its beautiful coral reefs represent one of the major attraction.
The most known holiday destinations in the area are. Cahuita, Puerto Viejo, Punta Cocles, Manzanillo and the Talamanca Mountain Range. See More
