Playa Avellanas
Geographically and atmospherically separated from Langosta, this beach is a beautiful 1-km (˝-mi) stretch of pale-gold sand with rocky outcroppings, a river mouth, and a mangrove swamp estuary.
In order to get there you have to drive inland from Tamarindo to Villareal and then 13 km (8 mi) down a very bumpy road.
Locals claim there are eight surf spots when the swell is strong.
There's a funky seasonal beach café called Lola's on the Beach (complete with a beach-loving pet pig named Lola) where you can hang out on driftwood tables and stools and exchange surfing stories while sipping fruit smoothies.
