Playa Junquillal
Junquillal (pronounced hoon-key-yall), to the south of Playa Negra, is a long swath of uninterrupted beach stretching about 3 km (2 mi), with calm surf and only one hotel.
This is one of the quieter beaches in Guanacaste and a real find for seekers of tranquility. New restaurants -- Peruvian, German, Italian, Swiss -- are adding an international flavor, and away from the beach, Junquillal is definitely getting livelier.
During the rainy season, the beach road from Playa Negra to Playa Junquillal is not transitable, and even during the dry season with a four-wheel-drive vehicle it's always a challenge.
Ask around about local conditions before attempting to take this route.
