Punta Islita
Punta Islita is named for a tiny tuft of land that becomes an island at high tide. The curved beach is rather rocky but good for walking, especially at low tide when tidal pools emerge between the volcanic rocks.
Another interesting stroll is through the small village, which has become a work of art in progress, thanks to a community art project, led by renowned Costa Rican artists that use town buildings as their canvas.
The main attraction here is the one and only hotel, a luxury destination perched high above the secluded beach. In the rainy season, it is often impossible to cross the Río Oro, south of Carrillo, so you have to make a 50-km (31-mi) detour along dirt roads offering spectacular mountain views and lots of potholes too.
Most people fly in to the hotel private airstrip.
