Fortuna
Fortuna is the nearest town to Volcano Arenal with a well developed tourist infrastructure, plenty of hotels, restaurants, shops, and tour operators.
From this quaint picturesque town one can enjoy on clear days and with a bit of luck (hence the name Fortuna meaning “luck” in english), the best view of the volcano showing its exceptionally perfect conic shape.
Its real name is La Fortuna de San Carlos to distinguish it from another village called La Fortuna located in Guanacaste at about 70 km (43miles) northwest from here. The village is the perfect arrival and departure point for visits to Volcano Arenal National Park , the cloud forest of Monteverde and Santa Elena and the northern lowlands of San Carlos and Los Guatuso.
If Arenal Volcano is one of the most sough after place among visitors with its magnificent hot springs, Cerro Chato lagoon and scenic trails, Fortuna can deliver more magic than one can think. You can be lazy in Fortuna but the place is so “explosive” and so stimulating that you´ll certainly end up hiking through the hanging bridges of Arenal, paddling in the Fortuna river, biking around Laguna de Arenal, visiting the crocodile ranch, hiking or horse riding to La Fortuna waterfalls. Other popular trips include excursions to Venado Caves, Caño Negro National Wildlife Refuge, white water rafting on the Sarapiqui , Peñas Blancas and Toro River.
At the end of your “explosive” day an invitation to stroll aroun town, here friendly and hospitable people still retain their “sabanero” feel, typical of the Ticos of this region.
Sunsets are explosive too!
