Sarapiquí River:
Some parts of this scenic tropical river are navigable downstream after the town of Puerto Viejo. Boat tours can be arranged, they normally last from two to three hours. This is the best way to observe wildlife. Among the species commonly seen are: sloths, howling monkeys, black river turtles, crocodiles and many birds. The River has its orgins on the northen slopes of Barva and Poás volcanoes and at the border with Nicaragua, reaches the San Juan River.
Upstream from Puerto Viejo the River is ideal for practicing one of the best kayaking and whitewater rafting in the country.
La Selva Biological Station:
Managed by the consortium Organization for Tropical Studies, this biological station is a paradise for scientists and researchers who have at their disposals the faclilities of very well equipped laboratories, experimental colture and a library to study the ecological process of the rainy forest. Founded in 1963, the Organization for Tropical Studies is a consortium of 56 U.S., Costa Rican and Puerto Rican universities and two museums.
