Near the village of Sarchí (53 km/33miles Northwest San José on the Panamerican Highway), at the beginning of the 20th century, an employee of the coffee mill La Luisa had the brilliant and artistc idea of painting with colorful drawings the sides and wheels of oxcarts. This idea was converted into tradition and most oxcarts (carretas) exhibited lively geometric paintings. Nowadays the Carreta is the National Symbol of Work, but it is becoming more and more rare as a working tool.
The increasing of tourism created a prolific production of miniaturized oxcarts available for the sale in souvenir stores. The center of this production is the village of Sarchí where the visitor is welcome to tour the workshops of many of these shops and watch how local craftsmen paint their art pieces. Sarchi is also know for it very colorful church in blue and green. All this is center stage in a park across from the church in the center of town where the largest oxcart is on display.
