The Province and the city of Alajuela

Climate

The city of Alajuela and the towns extending on the western side of the province are characterized by a warm and mild climate all year round. The majority of the province itself lies on the opposite side of the Volcanic Ranges and extends up to the Nicaraguan border.

Northern lowlands receive the influence of weather conditions from the Caribbean. These lands, once covered with rain forest, have been heavily exploited for agricultural purposes altering the landscape and affecting partially the climate.

The area though, still registers high rates of annual rainfall. Climate turns into wet and cool on the Caribbean slope of the mountain ranges which highest tip is represented by the summit of Volcán Poás at 2,700 meters above sea level.
History

In order to avoid difficulties in attending those who lived far away from established towns, the Catholic colonists founded in 1782 a new Parish on the Western side of Heredia in an area called La Lajuela, name that later changed into Alajuela, also known as “Villa Hermosa” (beautiful town)

The city of Alajuela lies 18 km (11miles) Northwest of San Jos é. 2.5 km (1,5miles) far from “Juan Santa María” International Airport. There´s not much to see in the city apart from the “Parque Central” and the “ Parque Juan Santa María” with its monument dedicated to this National Hero. See more Info
