History:
The Spanish conqueror Juan Vásquez de Coronado founded in 1563 the city of Cartago which was declared capital of the Province of Costa Rica during the entire colonial period. Two years after indipendence from Spain, in 1823, the new Republic of Costa Rica moved the seat of its government to the city of San José actual Capital of the Country.
Climate:
The province of Cartago is located in its majority on the Atlantc divide. The valley of the Reventazón River is surrounded by the Irazú and Turrialba Volcanoes to the North and by the Cerro de la Muerte and Mount Chirripó to the South. Being the city of Cartago located under the shadow of Irazú Volcano (3432 meters high) it is one of the driest areas of the country.
This province is almost entirely located on the Atlantic slope and consists mainly of mountains surrounding it to the North (Irazú and Turrialba Volcanoes) and South (Mount Chirripó and Cerro de la Muerte) and the Valley of Reventaz ón River. Great part of the province is mostly cloud covered and temperatures are cool all year round although the city of Cartago, which lies in the rain shadow of Irazú Volcano, is quite dry.
