The Central Valley Region
A great fertile Valley surrounded by mountains that "smell " like coffee, where families still brew their morning drink the old way. On the lush green slopes of Volcano Poás and Irazú nestle quaint villages that take us back to the Costa Rica of the old days, with their mud and cane houses (known as "casas de adobe"), with chickens and pigs wondering around the village dirt roads and where farmers still use their colored oxcarts to transport agricultural product.
This rural lifestyle creates an interesting contrast with the modern way of living of restless downtown San José.
Other major cities in the central valley are: Heredia, Cartago, Alajuela.
