Traveling by Bus in Costa Rica
This isan unexpensive way to travel, buses will drop you at intermediate points on request, bus drivers become very flexible once out of the main cities.

Do you remember the Old School Bus?
Traveling by bus maylimit you to visit only major centerswhile missing out on less-accessible areas, areas wherethe only mean of transportation is an old farmer's Land Rover or a ToyotaLand Cruiser (1559 Vintage, of course!)
Bus connections can be tricky, as private bus companies operate from different parts of townthis may involve a long walk or taxi ride.
However, if time is on your side, traveling by bus can be real fun....and a very economical way of living the "pura vida" experiencefrom a different perspective.
Tips on Traveling by bus
To ensure that traveling by bus in Costa Rica will be a thoroughly enjoyable experience, please check out these useful tips:
- Travel light. Leave any excess luggage in your hotel in S. José.
- Long distance buses have storage compartments but short distance and local buseshave very limited storage space....(your surf board may not fit!)
- It is advisable to buy your ticket in advance expecially during the high season or you might be in for unpleasant surprises like riding “ en pie” (standing) or not riding at all!
- Smoking and alcoholic beveragesare not permitted.
- Never put valuables on an overhead rack. Keep them with you.
- Buses may leave promptly but hardly arrive on time, potholes, landslides, mechanicalbreakdowns are all part of… the fun.
- Buses in Costa Rica can be divided into two categories: “Corriente” (regular service) and “directo” (direct). Althought it is notalways possible totell the difference, the “corriente” makes unscheduled intermediate stops to pick up and let off passengers, while the “directo” should get you to destination by making onlythose necessary stops for food and toilet service.
- Use the “servicio sanitario” (toilet) before you board your bus. Keep some coins handy, a clean toilet means an attendant charging a small fee for the use of toilet facilities. Carry some toilet paper or tissues with you, attendants are not always generous when it comes to give you your “share” of toilet paper.
- Oh, yes....you'd better laugh now…..because it will be difficult to do so when the emergency arises!!!
- Buses with toilet service are a rare sight, such facilities can be found on international routes only.
The Coca Cola Bus Terminal
The "Coca Cola" terminal bus in San José (Calle 16y Ave. 1-Ave. 3) is the mayor bus terminal in the city. It is the place where the first Coca Cola plant in C. R. was built.
This is a very important land mark in San José, the majority of addresses in the capital cityuse the espression "de la Cocacola" (from the Cocacola) as a referral point.
Nowadays it is ascruffy neighborhood. Watch out for pickpockets!!!
Never carry your wallet or document holder in your hip pocket and never use an open shoulder bag. Use a money belt instead or a neck belt that hungs under your shirt.
