Telephones in Costa Rica
There are several options when it comes to calling home.
You can find a public phone in almost every village in Costa Rica, the majority of them are placed next to the main village store or public bar.
Nowadays the old coin operated telephones are slowly giving way to more modern pre-paid telephone cards operated phones. Forget these coin operated phones if you want to place an international call and get a phone card instead.
Phone cards can be purchased when you arrive at the airport store or any supermarket.
The Costa Rican telephone company ICETEL (Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad y Teléfonía) offers 4 types of pre-paid telephone cards (tarjetas teléfonicas).
Chip card: (value:1,000 and 2,000 colones)
These are used in blue digital phone boots. Insert the card in the slot and follow the recorded instructions given in Spanish and English.
Colibrí 197 card: (value: 500 and 1,000 colones)
To be used in any touch-dial phone, for domestic calls only.
Dial 197 and then follow the recorded instructions.
Viajero199 card: (value: $10, $20 or 3,000 colones)
This can be used in all touch-dial, fixed and mobile phones for local and int´l calls.
Dial 199 and then 2 for instructions in English.
My suggestion is to keep both a Chip Card and a Viajero 199 Card, you will soon discover why!
Some internet cafés offer int’l call services using a VoIP system, in the Central Valley this tends to cheaper than the regular ICE service, however at tourists resorts - due to the deficiency of phone boots available and the difficulty of finding a phone card - prices tend to be higher than ICE tariffs.

Dial 175 for USA or 116 (operator assisted) to place a collect call (llamada a cobrar).
Dial 113 for local directory assistance, 123 to place a telegram by phone.
