Arenal Volcano National Park

Arenal Volcano Lagoon
Arenal is the most active volcano in the Western Hemisphere and has been in a constant state of activity since it last erupted in 1968. Located on the southern shore of Lake Arenal, it has a perfect conical shape which rises from the surrounding hills.

Arenal is best viewed during the early and evening hours due to the cloud cover that hinders your view especially during the rainy season. The sights and sounds of Arenal are truly a must-see.

Arenal's periodic eruptions of ash and molten rock, accompanied by thundering sonic blasts, are an unforgettable experience. At night you can watch the eruptions as the lava flow snakes down its sides and illuminates the sky.

Lake Arenal is the largest man made lake in Costa Rica.  Lake Arenal has an area of 33 square miles and feeds the hydroelectric dam, which produces 70% of Costa Rica’s electricity.

This lake has some of the best freshwater fishing in Costa Rica. Lake Arenal, is also known for its afternoon winds which blow from December thru March, making it a world class destination for windsurfing.

Within the park, the restaurant at the Arenal Observatory Lodge is open to the public. The Arenal Observatory Lodge was built in 1987 as a research station for scientists from the Smithsonian Institute and Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica.
