Central Market, San José



Central Market at San José DowntownThe Central Market or "Mercado Central" is located at the end of the pedestrian mall in downtown San José.
It is a bargain hunter's delight! Everything and anything you can imagine is available here – sometimes at eye-popping prices. From $5 knapsacks to a massive variety of knick-knacks and souvenirs, the Mercado Central has it.

Be sure to ask for Ice Cream. Costa Rica's very first ice cream store is located in the market, and it doesn't disappoint. Simply ask for "los helados" and you will be directed there.

Please be warned though that the Market is pickpocket heaven. Leave your valuables back at the hotel and don't bring along your purse. Visit with a friend.

Open Monday to Saturday from 9:00AM to 4PM.

Best time to visit is between 9:30AM and 11AM
