Peace Lodge at La Paz Waterfall Gardens
Seeking a “getaway”destination close to San Josè but far from the hustle and bustle that is San Jose?
We think we have a solution. Peace Lodge. It’s part of the La Paz Waterfall Gardens tourist attraction about an hour outside of San Jose, close to Poas Volcano.
Peace Lodge is minutes away from a variety of interesting day tours including Canopy tours, rafting on the Sarapiqui, Poas Volcano, and the Doka Estate Coffee Tour.
But forget the tours! We recommend you stay put and soak up the crisp mountain air (altitude is 5,225 feet) and absolute tranquility and serenity that Peace Lodge serves up.
Peace Lodge has 18 rooms ranging from a deluxe villa (that accommodates 5 comfortably) to deluxe and standard rooms. Why they chose to name any rooms in the hotel “standard” is befuddling.
All rooms feature majestic 16 foot ceilings, 2 Jacuzzis (1 outside!), oversize balconies with rocking chairs and hammocks, and handcrafted canopy beds. The views of the enveloping rainforest are absolutely exquisite. There is a fireplace in every room for the cool mountain evenings. They aren’t wood-burning, but we aren’t getting fussy considering that fireplaces are a very rare find in this tropical country
The Italians came and conquered the dining room. The food is very, very good. The service is better. Service-challenged Costa Rica finally has something to be proud of. We especially enjoyed the tilapia. The homemade cheesecake for desert beckoned us to order more. The meals are five courses. Our recommendation is to go very hungry.
Included in your lodging bill is a full menu breakfast and unlimited access to the adjoining La Paz Waterfall Gardens Nature Park ($25 per person value). The waterfalls are, how should we say, “nice” – there are five of them – but be prepared for a 90 minute walk. We didn’t mention the waterfalls in our postcards.
We did mention, however, the gigantic butterfly observatory. They say it is the largest in the world (about the size of a football field). We found the laboratory to be most interesting. It allows you the opportunity to see the butterflies up close as they emerge from their cocoons or in other stages of their growth.
Our favorite spot in the nature park was actually the Hummingbird garden. There are 24 species buzzing around. The “caretaker” of the hummingbirds, a genial Dutch man in his early fifties is a walking encyclopedia of the creatures. He has portable feeders available. Quite a treat!
