Costa Rica Train Tour
Come and join us onboard the most traditional Tico Train Tour to the community of Balsa in Atenas and enjoy a lovely full day blend of relaxation and interesting activities “a la Tica”.
After boarding the train at the Pacific Train Station in San José, you take a leisurely trip out of the city and through the countryside, past towns and villages such as San Antonio de Belén, Ciruelas, Atenas and finally Balsa, hometown of the Central America School of Cattle
After disembarking from the train, a short walk takes you to the school. On the way you pass a number of barns containing chickens, cows, goats, sheep and horses, surrounded by impressive local trees and green landscape.
The first activity is a rodeo Costa Rican style. Students on horseback test their skills against each other, livestock and of course, themselves. Racing, calf roping, barrel riding, and their own version of “musical chairs on horseback” provide fun and entertainment to all visitors.
Horseback rides are available for those who want to see the campus. These are working horses, trimmed and groomed with care by students at the school. Close by the staging area for the rides are the stables where you can see the other horses and cattle of the school.
Optional lunch is offered as a traditional barbeque with typical food of Costa Rica , well known as “casado.” Rice and beans, chicken, steak, salad, plantains, corn on the cob and ice tea are some of the delicious offerings. During lunch, entertainment is provided by musicians playing traditional Costa Rican melodies on the marimba.

A petting zoo offers the chance to see and touch farm animals up close. Holding a baby sheep is a wonderful way to experience farm life and gain an understanding of why some students are attracted to the school.
A tractor pulling a custom built wagon takes you to see some of the programs that the school offers. Agouti farming, turtles, and, of course, the crocodile program offer an insight into some of the more unusual classes offered by the school. After a day of fun and learning you reboard the train for the trip back to San Jose . Along the way, train staff entertains passengers with songs and dances, often inviting passengers to join in. When the train reaches the station in San Jose you can look back on a very satisfying day, full of experiences among friends.
As an optional tour is the exciting and unique sport of railbiking. This activity uses railbikes, bicycles with special attachments that allow them to be ridden directly on top of railroad tracks. Be a pioneer in an activity that is found nowhere else in North, South or Central America !
The 7.2 kilometer trip starts in Cebadilla and ends back at the train station in Balsa. You will quickly discover the joy of riding a pedal powered vehicle without the danger of traffic! Cross the 310 foot tall bridge at Rio Grande ! See beautiful countryside! See sights that were only accessible by train – until now! – Pls. call for more information.
