Tortuguero National Park

Turtles, anyone? Tortuguero National Park, located in Limon province in the northeast part of Costa Rica’s Atlantic coast, is turtle nirvana. Besides being the most important nesting site for the green turtle, this 47,000 acre National Park also serves as a refuge for other turtles, such as hawksbills and leatherbacks.

Of course the turtles have plenty of company. There are unusually large populations of monkeys, anurans, birds and fish. Resident wild life includes the tapir, ocelots, jaguars, otters, sloths, and frogs. Commonly seen birds include toucans, aricaris, oropendolas, swallow-tailed hawks, several species of herons, kingfishers, anhingas, parrots, and jacanas. Also, make sure to ask your guide to tell you about the famous bulldog bats in the area (which feed on fish).

The wide open canals of the park make viewing easier than at many other Costa Rica National Parks. Crocodiles and giant iguanas abound!

Tip #1: The best way to see Tortuguero is by boat. Take a tour or, if you're an adventurous type, there are plenty of places to rent a kayak or canoe.

Tip #2: Don't ask for turtle soup at any of the restaurants.
